The VASF began in 1987. In the years since, some remarkable things have happened. " In 1998 the mens football team won the National Championship. In the 96-97 academic year alone, 509 athletes represented UT in 20 Sports. Big Orange teams brought home National Championships and SEC titles. Individual Vols shattered records and represented the United States in the Olympic Games." Also in that same span, the University of Tennessee opened and expanded the Thompson-Boling Arena and Neyland Stadium respectively, making them the largest on-campus facilities of their kind in the nation. New facilities were also provided for the baseball, softball and soccer teams. Tom Black Track was refurbished and a new indoor tennis facility is soon to open. The growth of the VASF over that same span was also quite impressive. The number of donors grew from 2200 in 86 to over 9500 in 97.
